Experts have urged motorists trying to save money on fuel to follow a little-known cleaning trick that involves air filters. The news comes as fuel prices remain high, despite falling in recent weeks.

The RAC Fuel Watch indicates that drivers will have to pay 169.33 pence per liter for diesel and 183.49 pence per liter for diesel on average.

With that in mind, the experts at Car Lease Special Offers have warned drivers about the consequences of not cleaning their filters.

Bullen said: “Dirty air filters make your engine work harder than necessary, which means more fuel is used.

Motorists have also been urged to ditch premium fuels in favor of standard.

Retailers often claim that premium fuel offers performance and economic advantages and can even protect the engine.

In reality, unless they are driving a high-performance vehicle, drivers are unlikely to see much of an improvement, but they will pay an average of 10 pence more per liter.

By sticking to the lead-free standard, drivers can save £179.14 per year, according to the experts at Peter Vardy.

Other fuel-saving techniques drivers should follow include avoiding traveling during rush hour.

Avoiding traffic jams will prevent the car from constantly starting and stopping.

When a vehicle is forced to accelerate and brake all the time, fuel consumption is negatively affected.
