Uber driver’s untipped ride sparks debate

An Uber driver from New York said in a video now viral that he did not receive a tip for a trip with multiple stops.

The video, posted to TikTok last week by Neil Jordon, garnered more than 213,000 views and sparked a heated debate among commenters over who was to blame for the whole ordeal: the passengers for not tipping or Jordon for taking the ride. You may watch the video here.

Should You Tip Your Uber Driver?

Julia Boyd, “international etiquette expert,” previously said The New York Times that Uber passengers should tip their drivers between 10 and 20 percent, “depending on the level of service.”

“Many Uber rides can be more expensive than a standard taxi. However, a standard taxi offers standard service. Uber drivers will often have exceptionally clean cars and fresh water for their passengers,” Boyd told the newspaper.

It’s also important to note that Uber drivers do not earn a “consistent” salary. According to the company, its drivers earn a base rate “plus amounts for every minute and mile [they] ride. However, per-minute and per-mile rates vary by city, and Uber charges a 25 percent service fee on each fare. Therefore, even a small tip can go a long way.

“Drivers in Honolulu and Seattle can often see earnings of around $25 an hour, while drivers in places like Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Houston, Texas, can’t even make it to $10 an hour,” explained Ridester, a online ride sharing service resource. “Drivers earn 100 percent of tips, so getting even an extra dollar an hour can make a big difference in hourly earnings.”

Jordon, unfortunately, did not receive a tip, so he ended up earning very little for his complicated trip.

Jordan viral video

At the beginning of his video, Jordon said that the journey began at Walmart.

“So I stopped in front of Walmart to pick up these people, and it was three adults and three shopping carts full of groceries,” he recalled.

He allowed passengers to use the trunk of his car; however, the trunk was not large enough to hold all of her purchases.

“They packed the back seat and left places for two of them to sit, and one person sat in the front seat, they all had bags on their legs and my trunk was full,” Jordon described.

As they walked away from Walmart, one of the passengers said, “Hey, I don’t know if you noticed this on the app or not, but we’re stopping at Taco Bell.” Jordon explained that the stop wasn’t included in the ride info on the app, but he took them anyway.

“We get to where you order food at the drive-thru, and [one of the passengers] he wanted me to order it,” Jordon said, adding that he instead stepped forward so passengers could order through the rear window of his car.

“They ordered $49 worth of food from Taco Bell after my whole car was full of groceries,” Jordon said, taken aback.

When he finally got home, he waited patiently for the car to be unloaded, then went to sleep. But when Jordon walked away, he was disappointed that the passengers didn’t tip him.

“All that nonsense for $5.69 and no tip,” he concluded. “That’s bloody nonsense.”

Spectators react

Some onlookers agreed that it was wrong for passengers to forego gratuity.

“I’m amazed at how many people don’t tip their Uber drivers. I’ve only used Uber a few times, but they always got a good tip,” wrote christineferguson66.

“[They] I should have given you a BIG TIP after all that,” said Lori Cain.

“I’m crazy about you man,” chelseainrecovery commented.

Posha added: “There is no excuse for this.”

Others, however, said Jordon was wrong to agree to the ride, with one person even blaming Uber for the incident.

“Know your policy, what’s out loud and what’s not. Negotiate if you’re not part of the deal, missed opportunity! Don’t be afraid to say no. It’s all up to you,” Retro1329 argued.

One user wrote: “I don’t blame the customers, blame Uber.”

Meanwhile, Alex said, “That might be silly, but that’s silly that you agreed to do.”

Other viral moments

Jordan isn’t the first driver to complain about tips.

Last summer, an app-based delivery guy broke down in tears after driving an hour and only receiving a $1 tip.

A DoorDash driver went viral in March for filming a McDonald’s packaged order that wasn’t being picked up because the customer didn’t include a tip.

And in May, an Instacart driver took to TikTok to call out customers for “tip bait.”
