BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – When a person comes home to find that an unwanted stranger has broken in and stolen valuables, they may feel devastated and powerless.
They might also wonder if steps could have been taken to prevent the theft.
According to the US Department of Justice“Although it is impossible to make a building completely burglary-proof, preventative measures can deter most burglaries by making it more difficult for the thief to enter the building.”
Some practical suggestions that can reduce the likelihood of a home break-in are listed below:
Experts often point that when criminals look for a house to seize, they are typically attracted to houses that are dark and appear to be empty.
To make sure your home doesn’t fall into this category, keep your yard well-lit and leave some interior lights on even when you’re not home. When you’re away, it can also be helpful to turn on the radio or television to make it sound as if someone is home.
While it can be tempting to leave your curtains open to let in the sunlight and perhaps show off a beautiful painting and that new set of furniture you’re proud of, the experts say This is not a good idea. Valuables that attract the attention of thieves should not be displayed.
This includes expensive outdoor equipment like grills, lawnmowers, and even high-end cars. It may be best to store these items in a garage or, if possible, in a locked storage unit on your property.
While it’s well known that windows and doors should be kept closed and locked, it can be easy to forget about that door with a weak frame or broken window that needs to be fixed. the US Department of Justice warns: “Burglars generally break into doors and windows. Doors that are not locked, have weak frames, have outside hinges, or glass are particularly easy to break into. These doors need to be repaired, reinforced or replaced.”
He goes on to say: “Entrance doors should be solid wood or metal and should have peepholes. People moving to a new house or apartment must change all cylinders and install all new locks. Security locks must be used. Securing windows will also deter burglars, as most burglars won’t break glass to get in due to the noise involved.”
For those of us who have a tendency to lose our keys or get locked out of our own homes on a monthly basis, keeping a key stashed somewhere outside near the front door can seem like a saving grace.
Unfortunately, the key may not be as hidden as we think.
safehome.org states: “The reality is that criminals are aware of this practice and will often look for a hidden key before attempting to enter your home in any other way. It is also common for burglars to observe activity around the houses they are investigating. If they’re watching your house to see if it’s a house they want to break into, they can notice the key and exactly where you’ve placed it.”
Buying a reliable home security system can put a dent in your bank account, but it can be the lesser of two evils when it comes to protecting your home from break-ins. These systems are often loud enough to scare off thieves and quickly alert authorities to the situation.
Experts say that one of the best ways to keep jewelry, guns, cash, and other valuables safe is to store them in a large safe.
Hopefully, by following the suggestions above, you’ll be able to prevent potential theft.
