When it comes to keeping your car clean, going to the car wash can be a much more tempting idea than doing it yourself. However, according to cleaning expert Lynsey Crombie, there’s one essential car maintenance task you need to tackle “first” to keep hidden germs and bacteria at bay.
Even if your seats aren’t stained, they should be cleaned whenever you clean the interior of your car.
Lynsey explained: “If you have a steam cleaner or carpet cleaner, use it on cloth seats and car carpet to bring it back to life.
“Vacuum the interior regularly and treat stains as soon as possible to keep odors at bay.
“Be sure to pre-treat any stains by using a car-friendly stain treatment or by mixing liquid detergent with white vinegar to make your own.
“If you have pets or small children, use car seats or blankets that you can take out and clean regularly.
“Jelly Belly has a handy spray-on air freshener that I always keep in the car for regular spraying.”
Door handles and seals can often be forgotten in the cleaning process, but these can be some of the dirtiest areas according to Queen of Clean.
In addition to cleaning your car doors on the outside, Lynsey advises giving the inside a quick wipe down to remove dirt and bacteria buildup.
She said: “Use a warm soapy water solution for car doors and dashboard and shine with a specific dashboard product or window cleaner.”
Keeping clutter at bay and reducing litter buildup can help extend the time between cleanings, especially for families.
Lynsey said: “My best advice is to remove rubbish and belongings like children’s coats and toys as soon as you return home, otherwise you’ll find those items are sitting there and clutter breeds clutter.”
