Israel-Premier Tech, the team with which Chris Froome will race the 2022 Tour de France, has received a 24/7 police presence since arriving in Copenhagen for the Grand Start.
According to a support staff member from one of the teams staying at the same hotel, the additional police presence is a security issue for the team.
Eight police officers and three police cars were stationed at the hotel on Thursday afternoon, the day before the stage time trial starts, with officials saying “everything is fine” and declining further comment.
Israel-Premier Tech confirmed to CyclingTips that the police presence is due to the team being in the hotel and is related to the terrorist attack on the Great Synagogue in the Danish capital seven years ago.
“In Denmark, after the terrorist attack in front of the Great Synagogue in Copenhagen in 2015, the police are always present when an Israeli delegation, such as the Israel-Premier Teach team, stays in Copenhagen,” the team told Cycling Tips. “It is not by request of the team, but by default of the Danish police.”
Israel-Premier Tech, funded by Israeli-Canadian billionaire Sylvan Adams, was founded with the goal of seeing an Israeli team participate in the Tour de France. This year, along with four-time winner Chris Froome and Michael Woods and Jakob Fuglsang, Israeli Guy Niv was a late addition to the lineup after South African Daryl Impey tested positive for COVID-19.
The WorldTour team has previously been the object of anti-Israel protests, most recently on the Route d’Occitanie in France earlier this month. The ‘Collectif Palestine Vaincra’ held a roadside banner as the team’s cyclists passed, reading: “Boycott Israel: Against Colonialism, Racism and Apartheid” while waving the Palestinian flag.
