Haas has taken inspiration from Ferrari for the major upgrade it introduced to its VF-22 this weekend.
The team confirmed in documents provided to the FIA that it brought a new floor, engine cover, cooling bodywork, rear suspension and other changes for this weekend. The new parts will only be used on Kevin Magnussen’s car.
Team principal Guenther Steiner admitted that the team had been inspired by Ferrari’s design for its F1-75 for its upgrade. “There are three concepts out there,” he explained. “There is the Ferrari concept, the Red Bull concept and the Mercedes concept. In total, the big three.
“We are closer to Ferrari, so obviously we are going to see what Ferrari has done and copy it. But that took a little bit of time because they had to launch their car and do races and then we had to go into the wind tunnel to do tests looking at that car.
Adopting the Ferrari design philosophy was an obvious choice for Haas, as it uses the Ferrari power unit, gearbox and other components. “Obviously, if you have the same concept as Ferrari, you’re not going to copy Williams, you know? You copy something that is similar.”
The Haas update comes after most teams have already made major changes to their cars. Steiner said the team took its time to ensure the update was a step forward as it got off to a stronger-than-expected start to 2022.
“It takes a bit longer, because first you want to see what other people are doing: what works, what doesn’t. We took a little bit of time, because I said I think we’re in a pretty good place for where maybe we’re supposed to be.
“We didn’t expect to come out so strong at the beginning. So let’s try to win as much as possible and let’s see what’s out there and try to see which way we can go.”
Most of its rival teams have brought revisions to the rear of their cars for the Hungaroring’s high downforce requirements. However, Ferrari and Williams have not brought any updates this weekend.
Reason for Modification: Performance: Flow Conditioning
Difference: “Slat added to halo fairing”
Description: “The slat helps to control the flow over the halo ensuring the flow stays attached, improving flow to the rear of the car.”
Reason for Modification: Performance: Local Load
Difference: “New rear wing tips”
Description: “Increases flow acceleration under the rear wing, which increases local loading and drag. This is our maximum downforce rear wing appropriate for this track.”
Reason for Modification: Performance: Local Load
Difference: “New Increased Camber Girder Wing”
Description: “Increases the flow acceleration under the beam wing, which increases the local load and the diffuser load. This is our maximum downforce rear wing appropriate for this track.”
Reason for Modification: Performance: Local Load
Difference: “Revised Beam Flange Geometry”
Description: “To accompany the upper rear wing elements typically selected for the Hungarian GP, a new wing geometry has been created for increased local downforce.”

Reason for change: Circuit Specific – Cooling Range
Difference: “Updated internal ducting and brake cooling flow outlet.”
Description: “Updated front corner geometry features a modified internal duct and increased exit area resulting in improved front brake cooling.”
Reason for Modification: Performance: Local Load
Difference: “Local flow conditioning surfaces at the bottom of the floor”
Description: “Flow conditioning surfaces have been added to the bottom of the floor to improve local flow structures throughout the operating range.”
Reason for Modification: Performance: Reduced Drag
Difference: “Revised outer end of beam flange where it meets end plate.”
Description: “The unloaded outer ends of the beam wing reduce drag with very little downforce loss compared to the previous version of this type of beam wing (from Barcelona and Monaco).”

Reason for Change: Track Specific – Drag Range
Difference: “Rear wing endplate junction with modified upper rear wing elements.”
Description: “Revised rear wing tip geometry provides better optimal performance for the specific characteristics of the Hungaroring circuit.”
Reason for Change: Track Specific – Drag Range
Difference: “A new rear wing tip and associated changes to the rear wing and endplate.”
Description: “This wing is our maximum downforce to suit the low efficiency circuit characteristics at this event. It does this by increasing the load on the rear wing.”
Reason for Modification: Performance: Local Load
Difference: “Updated floor with re-profiled elements throughout the body.”
Description: “The redesigned floor, with updated elements and a redesigned main body, generates more downforce and only marginally increases drag, which should provide an overall performance advantage.”

Reason for Modification: Performance: Local Load
Difference: “The underside of the main body and the diffuser have changed substantially in the evolution of the flow area.”
Description: “Development has allowed us to better interpret the 2022 regulations to increase downforce and better manage ride height sensitivities.”
Reason for Modification: Performance: Flow Conditioning
Difference: “All fences on the ground have been better optimized in curvature and orientation.”
Description: “The fences act to better condition flow development in the updated underbody. “
Reason for Modification: Performance: Flow Conditioning
Difference: “The floor border is very similar to our existing solution with many detailed geometric changes.”
Description: “Geometric changes are needed to better accommodate edge flows that interact with the updated bottom.”
Reason for Modification: Performance: Local Load
Difference: “The full coke and engine cover evolve with more diffusion on the top deck and a smoother transition between the capsule front and the coke sidewall. At the rear, we have introduced an additional cooling outlet around the rear suspension legs.”
Description: “The evolution of the shape allows us to better manage the flow incident on the elements that produce downforce at the rear.”
Reason for Modification: Performance: Flow Conditioning
Difference: “The new form of coke results in an evolution of the slats that cover the range of cooling required for the rest of the season”
Description: “The grilles of the new bodywork are better distributed to avoid an unfavorable interaction of the cooling flow with the elements that produce downforce at the rear. “

Reason for Modification: Performance: Flow Conditioning
Difference: “The rear suspension legs have had a complete overhaul of their aerodynamic fairings”
Description: “The review of the suspension fairings is necessary to better align them with the starting flows conditioned by the new upstream bodywork. This better conditions the flow that feeds the rear corner and the aileron of the beam”
Reason for Modification: Performance: Local Load
Difference: “The rear brake has been redesigned at the edge of the leading edge and the fins have been revised in number and profile/camber details.”
Description: “The new rear brake duct lip reduces incident flow losses on the fins behind it. The improved flow to the wings has allowed the profiles to evolve to increase local loading and better manage their interaction with the rear wing.”
