Carlos Sainz shook up the established order by dominating a sodden Silverstone to claim his first career pole position at the British Grand Prix, but his joy could be short-lived with Max Verstappen close behind.
Sainz, not known for his wet weather skills, turned in a stellar fast lap in treacherous conditions to claim a seventh pole of the season for Ferrari.
But in typical British summer fashion, the conditions for Sunday’s race will be entirely different to qualifying with a dry day forecast and bookies believe the sun may already have set on the possibility of Sainz gets his first victory in Formula 1.
The Spaniard has an overall chance of 4-1 to end Red Bull’s six-match winning streak and while he has driven well of late, finishing second in two of the last three races, he could end up being the maid of honor once plus.
Verstappen, the villain of the Silverstone pantomime, was in ominous form on Saturday and could have taken pole had he not aborted his final fastest lap in qualifying after Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc flipped in front of him.
The Dutch driver had been quickest in the first two parts of qualifying, but it was his performance in dry practice earlier in the day that was the biggest indicator of Red Bull’s potential.
The world champion was four tenths of a second quicker than anyone in final practice and is at the top of his game having won six of the last seven races to move 46 points clear in the drivers’ standings.
Verstappen’s record at Silverstone is also decent, winning the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix in 2020 and taking two second places, while he might as well have won last year’s British Grand Prix, but for his infamous run-in with Lewis Hamilton at the first lap.
Verstappen is unlikely to mind a Mercedes this time around, even if the Silver Arrows experience their usual bump on race day.
The improvements Mercedes have introduced this week have certainly had a positive effect, bringing them closer to Red Bull and Ferrari, but qualifying remains an issue and both Hamilton and George Russell have a mountain to climb if they want to send the fans home happy. after qualification. fifth and eighth respectively.
Alpine could be the wild card of the race. Fernando Alonso recorded his first front-row start in a decade in Canada last time, he was quick in Friday practice in his upgraded Challenger and will start from seventh on Sunday.
Alonso is a two-time British Grand Prix winner, while team-mate Esteban Ocon is doing well at this circuit, posting a top-ten finish from all four starts at the Northamptonshire venue.
Ocon was caught off guard by the weather when he qualified 15th, but practice data suggests he could move around the field.
Alpine was best of the rest in practice and can expect to be in the points mix again, as both cars have finished in the top ten four times this year.
