NFU Mutual also advised drivers that prevention is always better than cure, so drivers should check what fuel they can use in their cars.
Dave Rossall, auto claims manager for NFU Mutual, echoed Mr Potter’s comments, urging drivers to check their E10 compatibility before visiting a service station.
He said: “Putting the wrong fuel in a vehicle is comparatively easy to do, so it should be reassuring to know there is insurance cover.”
“Expert opinion varies, but putting E10 in an older petrol vehicle once should be fine, but making that mistake repeatedly is not recommended because it could cause damage.
